Some Welcome Rain
Posted on May 21, 2025.
Some scrappy looking convection provided much needed rainfall for parts of Essex this afternoon.
Not the most photogenic of showers/storms but a few rumbles were heard.

Some heavy showers around Essex today, but it was really hard to pick out any kind of structure though the murk (and power lines!). This was about the best of the lot.

A very quick stop at 5am on my way to work. Some how I managed to time this perfectly as the Aurora was gone within minutes.

Another evening display of Aurora, this time managing to beat the glare of a full moon. Nicely lined up below the Plough/Big Dipper.

Today was meant to be about chasing storms across Lincolnshire, but as if often the case in the UK, the storms were terrible and so was the traffic. Although I did forget just how flat parts of the county were and how easy it could have been for any storm photography. The Aurora later that night however, did not dissapoint! Rather unexpected but much appreciated after a seriously hot (36c) drive home.

We watched a rather disorganised, though some what photogenic, band of showers slowly approach the beach at Bradwell for an hour or so. These seemingly intensifed overhead, and produced some brief but impressive thunder as we made a hasty retreat back to the car.

First thunderstorm of the year for 2024 and this was within casual driving distance, being just off the East Essex coast. I do like storms that approach over the sea as this means less time wasted trying to find a clear vantage point. Not the most electrically active but I did manage to capture one CG strike.
